What a COP28 out!

November 2023

Expo City, Dubai, a showpiece of UAE oil wealth, hosts COP28 this month, with five main aims on the agenda:

  1. to monitor climate action progress and reinvigorate the commitment to previous targets/pledges;
  2. to speed the energy transition and reduce carbon emissions to keep the 1.5Β°C target alive;
  3. to put people at the heart of initiatives to protect community resilience in the face of climate change;
  4. to raise money from richer to poorer countries and grow markets for climate-friendly products; and
  5. broader leadership on climate change to convert climate pledges into action.

With 167 world leaders, including the Pope and King Charles III, and don’t forget the not insignificant entourage which goes with each attendee, flying in from all around the globe for 12 days of wining, dining and sidelining, it’s now clear for all to see what it is and always has been - a freebie junket for the pampered establishment. With their distinct lack of vision and political will combined with reports that UAE is planning to use its role as the host as an opportunity to strike oil and gas deals, it’s only a matter of time before we smash through the 1.5Β°C ceiling set at COP26 just two years ago.
