Stop sewage pollution at Whitburn: petition update

Steve Lavelle

Feb. 2022

The Environment Agency (EA) issued Northumbrian Water (NW) with an Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR) Compliance Assessment Report (CAR) on 13th April 2021 with respect to the operation of the Whitburn permit 245/1207. The CAR declared: It was brought to the attention of the EA that a new connection has been made into the Whitburn Steel interceptor tunnel…[and] [a]ction needs to be taken to return the site back into compliance...by the due date (30/06/2021).

As recently as 21st January 2022, the EA confirmed that NW had not taken the required action with their legal team challenging the validity of the CAR.

Can you help to take the campaign one step further? With the sewage pollution discharged at Whitburn affecting South Shields, Marsden, Seaburn and Roker can you email Sunderland MP, julie.elliott.mp@parliament.uk or South Shields MP, emma.lewell-buck.mp@parliament.uk to request an inquiry to determine why NW has not complied with the report and why the EA are continuing to 'negotiate' despite a clearly identified breach of permit?
